# 2023 AIMS Funding Opportunity – Machine Learning for Bioacoustics for African Students
Machine Learning for Bioacoustics for African Students: 2023 AIMS Funding Opportunity
One student’s work in machine learning and bioacoustics is being funded by AIMS South Africa, the National Research Foundation (NRF), and the South African Radio Astronomy Observatory (SARAO). At AIMS, in Muizenberg, South Africa, the student will share an office with a team of researchers who work well together and are enthusiastic.

The project will make use of Chinese audio soundscape data that includes the vocalizations of the Hainan gibbon, the most endangered primate in the world. The student will investigate how advances in deep learning can be applied to problems in bioacoustics, specifically how to automatically detect animal sounds. The candidate will investigate auto-encoders, transformers, and cluster algorithms that automatically identify and classify sound categories using unsupervised and supervised learning algorithms. Ecologists would benefit from the developed approaches because they would provide them with straightforward deep learning-based tools that would make data processing easier for them. The student can also use audio recordings from other locations to validate their algorithms and record audio data in Cape Town.

The student will receive a single scholarship worth one hundred seventy-two thousand nine hundred Rand (R 172 900) per year for a maximum of two years.
a one-time travel grant for the student’s participation in a workshop or conference related to their research over the two years that the scholarship is awarded, totaling fifteen thousand Rand (R 15 000).

A one-time laptop grant of 20,000 Rand (R 20,000) to help the student buy a laptop they need for their research.
